Music in your business is legally different from music at home. Here is what you need, what we arrange and what you arrange yourself.
How it works
Playing music in a business space — a shop, restaurant, gym or office — is playing music to the public. Different rules apply than at home, and consumer subscriptions such as Spotify and Apple Music prohibit business use in their terms.
There are two kinds of rights. The right to stream the music itself for business use is included in your BackSound Stream subscription. The public performance licence from Buma/Stemra and Sena is separate: every business arranges that itself, whichever music service it uses.
Included in your subscription
✓
The music itself, licensed for business use
All 120 million tracks are licensed through our partners to be streamed in your business. Nothing to arrange with labels or publishers.
✓
No Spotify risk
Consumer services exclude business use. With BackSound Stream you play the same music on a service that is actually meant for it.
✓
Reporting to the rights organisations
We track what is played and report it, so artists, composers and producers receive their share.
Not included: the public performance licence
—
Buma/Stemra
Pays composers and lyricists for music heard in public. Required for every business that plays music, whichever service it uses.
—
Sena
Pays artists and producers for the same. Both licences are requested in one go at mijnlicentie.nl, the central licensing desk for music in the Netherlands.
